Where are the Azores Islands?
Situated in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, about two hours flying time from Lisbon (about 1,500 Km) and five hours flying time from the eastern coast of North America (about 3,900 Km), the archipelago is spread out in the area of the parallel that passes through Lisbon (39º, 43'/39º, 55' North Latitude), giving it a moderate climate, with mild annual oscillation.
Where is Pico Island?
Stretching out from the volcano, with an altitude of 2,351 meters, which gives it its name, the island of Pico (which means Peak) has an oblong shape, a length of 42 km, a width of 15.2 km and a total area of 447 km2. A plateau with secondary volcanic cones ends next to the sea in tall cliffs while the lowest area, in the west, has moderate slopes. It is situated at 28º 20' West longitude and 38º 30' North latitude
Where are the Adegas?
Prainha - The second settlement founded on the northern coast of the island. Place to visit: Church of Nossa Senhora da Ajuda. Large edifice, with an interesting facade (18th c). Typical old wine cellars, connected with the centuries-old production of verdelho wine, mainly in the area of Canas bay. Close to a large mistério (mystery), a lava bed covered with trees, resulting from an eruption in 1572 and, in the woods overlooking it small but bucolic Lake Caiado.
